Wow! What a spectacular sight! Have you seen that mountain of water gushing over the falls? Have you heard the thundering sound as that wall of water hits the river bottom below? Have you experienced the ‘awe’ of one of the natural wonders of the world? If you haven’t been to Niagara Falls yet, it is certainly worth a visit.
Niagara Falls is one of the great tourist areas that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime. Standing beside the falls and feeling the mist on your face as you watch that tremendous waterfall stream by you is definitely and awe-inspiring experience. There is a fantastic walkway where you can enjoy walking along just before the water begins to fall over the edge, and the walkway continues along the river so that you can see the height of the river below.
Just for a little information, the Canadian Falls is approximately 170 feet high and is ‘horseshoe’ shaped. The crestline of the Canadian Falls, or the width of the falls, is 2,200 feet at its widest. The depth of the water in the river below is actually deeper than the falls are high, measuring a depth of 184 feet.
The American Falls are slightly higher than the Canadian falls at 180 feet high and the crestline is approximately 1,075 feet wide. Each second, it is estimated that 75,000 gallons of water falls over the American Falls. As a point of interest, no one has ever dared to try to go over the American Falls in a barrel. All activities in this regard have taken place over the Canadian side, where the flow of water is greater and there are fewer rocks at the basin.
A curious tourist can participate in a “Journey Behind the Falls’ attraction located at Table Rock House Plaza beside the Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Here you can don raincoats and take a self-guided tour to look under the falls from an observation deck which is accessed by elevator and a series of tunnels. You can see the water tumbling down literally a few feet from your face as you stand on a platform, but watch it—you will get wet!
For a more adventurous tourist, Niagara Falls offers whirlpool jet boat tours which take you down the river along the Niagara Gorge. You witness close-up (just half a mile away) where the waterfalls hits the river in the gorge below them. It is an exciting experience that you won’t soon forget!
Not only are the Falls a spectacular sight that should not be missed, but there are many other attractions that draw hordes of people to Niagara Falls each year. Being a flashy tourist town there are various museums and attractions to engage the tourist. You can visit the famous Madame Toussad’s Wax Museum, you can visit the Floral Clock at Niagara’s Botanical Gardens, you can climb the Minolta or Skylon Towers, you can see the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum, you can enjoy Marine Land, or so many other things to do.
Niagara Falls also hosts Casino Niagara on the Canadian side of the falls for those with a gaming interest. Casino Niagara offers 123 gaming tables and over 3,000 slot machines for the gambler. There are wonderful dinner theatres and entertainment as well.
Niagara Falls is also reputed to be the ‘honeymoon capital of the world’. Each year thousands of newlyweds make Niagara Falls their first choice in destinations for their honeymoon. One can see why this is so when you gaze at the romantic and colorful lights that play in symphony over the falls at night.
Niagara Falls is a great place to see and to take the family to. There is something there to interest every member of the family. You will definitely want to put Niagara Falls on your list of places to visit before you die. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!
